KARAVAN MALL (Kyiv), renovation

Location: Kyiv, Ukraine

Area: 54,000 sq.m.

Chief Architect: Alexei Agafonov

Year: 2018

Karavan shopping and entertainment center on Luhova Street in Kyiv became the first facility in Ukraine of such level. It was built as a result of the reconstruction of an old pulp mill.

The area of the shopping and entertainment complex is about 60,000 square meters and includes the Auchan supermarket, galleries and brand boutiques, large food court, as well as the country’s first skating rink, which was located in the mall. Currently the ice field has been converted into a roller skating rink.

The mall is family-run and serves a large number of people from the Obolon and Vynohradar districts.

The idea of the customer, the managing company of DCH, was to transform the shopping center into a modern OUTLET with branded clothes.

The architectural and engineering company UVT GROUP was chosen to complete the renovation of the building.

During two months a team of specialists developed a new concept for the shopping center:

– new bright facades;

– updated (or rather new) galleries;

– redesigned and expanded food courts, restaurants;

– modernized roller skating rink.

In a short time the project was examined, permits were received and working documentation was completed in sufficient volume to start work.

As a result, the facade system (11,000 sq.m) on the sandwich panel with light slats and LED lighting was completely replaced. They illuminate the facade in the dark.

The front part of the five-storey office is made of dark rebate with illuminated slats. New entrance groups were designed, two of which allow visitors to come to the mall right under the canopy. Taxi call points are equipped in these places. Each input group has its own color that matches the color of the galleries.

The galleries are bright and updated with a brightness of 650 suites, equipped with islands for the sale of small goods and recreation areas with the ability to charge phones. The new LED luminaires are designed directly for this facility.

Suspended ceilings are individually designed as multi-tiered and used by a Ukrainian manufacturer for the first time at this facility. The food area has been re-equipped with new furniture and recreation areas. The raised ceiling provides more space and the updated roller coaster has a bar at the ends and can accommodate 1,000 visitors for concerts.

Also it was changed the style of the brand “Karavan” with  new, unique signs for boutiques and tenants. Media screens, new receptions and ATM zones were designed for visitor comfort. As a result, major repairs, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply, video surveillance, low-current systems and electricity supply were partially replaced and designed.  Facilities for low-mobility groups were developed and additional evacuation corridors were created.
